The Three-Frame Composition Practice

A short field exercise that turns one promising scene into three deliberate compositional choices.

Applies to: Written for Fujifilm photographers. Camera menu names, film simulations and available settings vary by model and firmware.

Frame the obvious view

Start with the photograph that first drew you in. This creates a useful reference, but do not stop there.

Change your distance

Move closer or farther away and look again. A small shift can simplify the background, strengthen a foreground or make the subject feel more intimate.

Make a detail with purpose

For the third frame, isolate a shape, texture or gesture that explains the larger scene. The exercise teaches you to build a sequence rather than hunt for one lucky frame.
