Exposure Compensation: A Small Dial With a Big Job

Learn when exposure compensation is the fastest way to protect the mood of a frame.

Understand what the meter sees

A camera meter aims to balance the whole frame. A snow scene, dark room or bright window can therefore look wrong even when the meter is behaving exactly as designed.

Choose the tones that matter

If highlights carry the atmosphere, expose with room for them. If a face or dark subject is the story, make sure it does not disappear. Compensation gives you a direct response.

Reset with intention

After a difficult scene, check the dial before moving on. A quick reset prevents a successful adjustment from becoming an accidental setting for the next location.
